Blog Post: Roland’s AI-Powered “Tone Explorer” Reimagines Sound Discovery for Music Makers
Roland has introduced Tone Explorer, an AI-powered tool that analyzes MIDI phrases and suggests compatible instrument sounds to help musicians overcome creative block. Developed in collaboration with AI firm Qosmo, the tool leverages neural networks to score and recommend tones based on compatibility. Currently in a technology preview, it integrates with Roland’s Zenology and Galaxias platforms and invites user feedback to guide future development.

For electronic music creators, Roland Cloud has long been a goldmine—offering everything from vintage synth emulations to cutting-edge soundscapes. Yet with such a deep library at their fingertips, many musicians find themselves overwhelmed by choice. Roland’s latest innovation aims to simplify that creative decision-making process.
Enter Tone Explorer, a new AI-powered tool from Roland’s Future Design Lab that helps musicians discover the right sounds for their musical ideas. While still in its “technology preview” phase, this tool could mark a major shift in how producers interact with virtual instruments.
Rather than expecting users to scroll endlessly through presets or guess what might fit, Tone Explorer acts as an intelligent assistant. You feed it a MIDI phrase, and it uses a neural network—trained on both MIDI and tone data—to evaluate how well different instrument sounds align with that input. It calculates the “distance” between your phrase and various tones to determine compatibility and assigns each a score. The result is a curated list of suggested presets, ranked and ready for exploration.
This isn’t about replacing human intuition. Instead, Tone Explorer narrows down options to help spark creativity. It’s designed to unblock those moments when too many choices stall the creative process. Roland describes it as a tool to “freshen ideas, remove writer’s block, and discover the undiscovered.”
The AI tech behind Tone Explorer is a collaboration between Roland’s R&D team and Qosmo, a Japanese AI firm known for blending art and algorithm. Their goal is not just to implement machine learning, but to do so in a way that respects artistic freedom. That’s why Roland is emphasizing user feedback during this preview period—inviting musicians to shape the tool’s future.
Tone Explorer currently integrates with Zenology, Roland’s software synth engine that powers their Zen-Core system, and Galaxias, the central hub for Roland Cloud’s extensive virtual instrument ecosystem. Galaxias itself recently saw a major update to version 1.3, adding improved plugin support (VST3 and AUv2), better LFO handling, and enhanced CPU performance. With over 23,000 classic and modern sounds, it’s a fitting companion to Tone Explorer’s smart browsing capabilities.
To try it out, Roland Cloud Ultimate subscribers can launch Tone Explorer in a Chrome browser. The experience is web-based and designed to be lightweight yet powerful. Just remember: it’s still a work in progress, and Roland is counting on feedback from real musicians to refine and possibly expand the feature set.
Ultimately, Tone Explorer represents a new kind of synergy between human creativity and machine intelligence. It’s not telling you what to create—it’s helping you find your voice faster and more intuitively. For producers buried under thousands of presets, this could be the creative catalyst they’ve been waiting for.
