Midjourney, a prominent player in the AI image generation space, is stepping up its game by introducing a new tool called V1, which enables users to create animated videos from static images. To animate their images, users simply press the “Animate” button, which generates a sequence of four five-second videos based on their input. V1 offers two animation settings: “automatic” and “manual.” The “automatic” setting uses a “motion prompt” to generate movement, while the “manual” option grants users more creative control to describe the desired motion and scene development.

Users can choose between two animation styles: high motion and low motion. In low motion, the camera remains mostly static as the subject moves slowly, whereas high motion features both the subject and camera in action. However, Midjourney acknowledges that excessive motion can sometimes lead to unexpected results, which may not always align with user expectations.

Importantly, V1 allows users to animate images uploaded from outside Midjourney. To do this, users need to drag their chosen image into the prompt bar, designate it as a “start frame,” and then provide a motion prompt. For those looking to keep their creations, the tool offers an “extend” feature that allows users to prolong their videos by approximately four seconds, up to four times.

However, users should be prepared for a steeper cost when venturing into video creation with Midjourney. The price for generating video content is reportedly eight times higher than traditional image generation, leading to faster depletion of monthly credits. At this stage, Midjourney has indicated that the final pricing structure is still under consideration, as the costs associated with running these models can be unpredictable.

Amidst these developments, Midjourney is also facing significant challenges, including a lawsuit from Universal (https://www.universalpictures.com/) and Disney (https://www.disney.com/) , which accuses the startup of plagiarism by drawing on iconic productions for its imagery. Despite this legal hurdle, Midjourney remains ambitious about the future of its technology, with a spokesperson stating, "We believe the inevitable destination of this technology is models capable of real-time open-world simulations."
